Our 2022 Mid-Year Recap
It feels like it’s been a very fast six months! And it mostly feels that way since we’ve been churning out awesome projects non-stop. We want to take a pause and highlight some of the cool things that happened so far this year. So what’s been going on lately?
‘Brie’s Bake Off Challenge’ now on HBO Max
Last year we completed the sound mix on a charming family movie ‘Brie’s Bake Off Challenge’, and it was recently picked up by HBO Max. In this story, we follow Brie who is on a mission to win her school’s baking challenge. Her life gets caught up in a mix of things where her rival Vanessa does everything possible to keep her from winning the grand prize.
‘Unfinished’ now streaming on BET+
A few short months ago we wrapped sound on an exciting thriller feature called ‘Unfinished’ for the BET network. The story follows a struggling writer named Zora who is dealing with schizophrenia, and her attempt to solve the mystery of her father’s recent death. The line between fantasy and reality starts to blur as she attempts to discover what really happened while dealing with her illness.
‘Everyday in Kaimuki’ featured at Sundance
Earlier this year, we completed sound on a feature film called ‘Everyday in Kaimuki’, which went on to premiere at Sundance in January.
The story follows a young man who spent his whole life in a small suburb of Honolulu, Hawaii. Feeling unfulfilled, he is determined to leave in order to find his real purpose in life, but faces a number of struggles trying to move on from a town that knows him so well.
We also sat down with the director Alika Tengan to talk about this film and what makes it special.
We made it to Cannes
A number of short films we have worked on over the past few years made their way to Cannes 2022; The War Within, The Attempt, and Broken Layers. All three films were made by filmmakers at the Santa Monica College Film Program. We are fortunate to have been a partner with SMC over the past 10 years and have worked very closely with students and faculty on their phenomenal projects.
Congratulations to all of the filmmakers for their amazing work at Cannes! We are honored to be a part of these projects, and are excited they are getting some well-deserved attention at one of the largest film festivals in the world.
We are continuing to expand our team
The industry came back full-force after the pandemic shut-down, and we had to expand our team quickly to take on the new rush of work. In the beginning of the year we hired two new sound editors, Rachel and Alex. Rachel came from our internship program, and now we have a new intern, Caleb, taking the helm and learning many studio duties. We are still continuing to expand our search for experienced mixers and sound effects editors to bring to the team.
Construction is still underway
In the beginning of the year we began construction on a second mix room. We are designing the room with Dolby Atmos and VR formats in mind. The world of audio is constantly expanding and we would like the opportunity to offer more services to our clients. A lot of care and planning is going into the space, with strong emphasis on proper wiring and acoustic isolation selection. We plan for the room to be completed in the next few months, and are looking forward to revealing the final product.
